TQC Journal | issue 49


The slow stitching fun continues with a variety of
3" blocks. Make one of each block using the same
 technique from the past two weeks. 

Slow Stitch Sampler
Each block will measure 3-1/2" including seam allowances. 

Pinwheel
From two different prints, cut:

2 squares, 2-3/8" x 2-3/8"
Cut each square diagonally once

1. Mark seam allowances and make half-square-triangles 
2. Piece block as diagramed

Bowtie
From light print, cut:
2 squares, 2" x 2"
From dark print, cut:
2 squares 2" x 2"
 2 squares, 1-1/4" x 1-1/4"
- - - - - - - - - - 
1. Mark a diagonal line on wrong side of 1-1/4" squares.
2. Stitch square on the line to one corner of each light square
3. Trim seam allowance to 1/4" and lightly press
4. Piece block as diagrammed. 

Churn Dash
From light print, cut:

2 squares, 1-7/8" x 1-7/8"
 4 rectangles, 1" x 1-1/2"
  1 square, 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"
From dark print, cut:
2 squares, 1-7/8" x 1-7/8"
4 rectangles, 1" x 1-1/2"
- - - - - - - - - - 
1. Cut 1-7/8" squares diagonally once and make
four half-square-triangles.
2. Join 1- x 1-1/2" rectangles along longer side. 
3. Layout block, stitch units in three rows. Join 
rows alternating seams at intersections. 

Friendship Star 
From light print, cut:
4 squares, 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"
2 squares, 1-7/8" x 1-7/8"
From dark print, cut
1 square, 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"
2 squares, 1-7/8" x 1-7/8"
- - - - - - - - - - 
1. Cut 1-7/8" squares diagonally once and make
four half-square-triangles. 
2. Layout block, stitch units in three rows. Join 
rows alternating seams at intersections. 

Join the blocks in a vertical row.
 Add your Half-Square- Triangle row to the left side
and your Four Patch row to the right side.

  1. Sheryl, I love the pink/gold pinwheel. I don't think I would have ever thought to put those two colors together but when I see them together in a scrappy quilt - I love it! Thanks for the inspiration.
