Mini Monday Sewing Bee

Snowball
Cutting is for one block, repeat to make four blocks

from first print, cut: 1 square, 4-1/2" x 4-1/2"
from second print, cut: 4 squares, 1-3/4" x 1-3/4"

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the 
wrong side of 1-3/4" squares. Place the marked square on
one corner of 4-1/2" square, stitch on line, trim 1/4" seam
 allowance and press. Repeat on opposite corners with
remaining square. Block should measure 4-1/2" x 4-1/2",
including seam allowances.

Once you finish your Snowball blocks you will be
ready to assemble this simple quilt. This easy setting
will go together in no time. 

Simply sew together eight rows of six blocks.
Cut borders 4" wide and use your quilts dimensions
for the length of each strip. Add side borders, press
and add top and bottom borders. Quilt as desired and bind. 

Holiday Hot-pad Sew Along

Today make one Snowball block using the instructions above.
Add a border using 1-1/4" cut strips.
Block should measure 6" including seam allowances.
Do some simple hand quilting
Bind using a single thickness binding.

New Album 
Cutting is for one block, repeat to make four blocks

from first print, cut: 4 rectangles, 1-1/2" x 2-1/2"
              1 square, 2" x 2"
from second print, cut: 4 squares, 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"
2 squares, 2" x 2" cut once diagonally

Fold the dark 2" square in half vertically and horizontally,
and lightly crease to mark the center of each side. Fold the 
light triangles in half, and lightly crease to mark the center 
of the long side. Stitch triangles to opposite sides of square,
matching the center creases. Stitch triangles to the remaining 
sides of the square to make the center unit. Trim the unit
to measure 2-1/2" square, including seam allowances.

Arrange the center unit, 1-1/2" x 2-1/2" rectangles and
1-1/2" squares in three rows. Sew the pieces together in 
rows. Join the rows to make a New Album blocks,
measuring 4-1/2" square, including seam allowances.

Rail Fence
Cutting is for one block, repeat to make four blocks

from four prints, cut: 1 rectangle, 1-1/2" x 4-1/2"

Join four rectangles on long edge to make a Rail Fence block
measuring 4-1/2" square, including seam allowances. 
There is a lot of sewing to be done this week.
If you are sewing along with my Back to School-house project
this week homework is flying geese. Use your pattern to make
the necessary number of blocks.

Pinwheel
Cutting is for one block, repeat to make four blocks

from first print, cut: 2 squares, 3" x3"
from second print, cut: 2 squares, 3" x 3"

Use 3" squares to make four half-square-triangles as follows;
Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on wrong side
of lighter 3" square. Layer a marked square on top of second
print square, right sides together. Sew 1/4" from both sides of
drawn line. Cut on line to yield two half-square-triangles units.
Trim the units to measure 2-1/2" square, including seam
allowances. Make four units. 

Arrange the half-square-triangle units in two rows of two,
noting orientation of each unit. Sew the units together
in rows. Join the rows to make a Pinwheel block measuring
4-1/2" square, including seam allowances.

I have three daughters, each creative in their own way.
(still trying to turn at least one of them into a quilter)
Stephanie my middle daughter has picked up the ceramics
bug and is doing a lot of making in her spare time. She

Sawtooth Star
Cutting is for one block, repeat to make four blocks

from first print, cut: 1 square, 2-1/2" x 2-1/2"
from second print, cut: 4 squares, 1-7/8" x 1-7/8" cut diagonally once
from background print, cut: 1 square, 3-1/4" x 3-1/4" cut diagonally twice
             4 squares, 1-1/2" x 1-1/2"

Sew the small triangle to the short side of the larger triangle; press.
Sew another small triangle to the other short side to make a
flying geese unit. The unit should measure 1-1/2" x 2-1/2",
including seam allowances. Make a total of four units. 

Arrange the flying geese, 2-1/2" square and four 1-1/2" squares
in three rows. Sew the units and squares together into rows. 
Join the rows to make a Sawtooth Star block measuring
4-1/2" square, including seam allowances. 

Potholder Quilt

This was such a fun project. I can't believe it took me so long to 
finally get it done. The idea is simple. Take extra blocks or
make them just for this purpose, quilt each blocks individually
and bind. I used a ladder stitch to join them together on the back.

Four Patch
Cutting is for one block, repeat to make four blocks

from first print, cut: 2 squares, 2-1/2" x 2-1/2"
from second print, cut: 2 squares, 2-1/2" x 2-1/2"

Lay out the 2-1/2" squares in two rows of two.
Sew the squares in rows. Join the rows to make
a Four Patch block that measures 4-1/2" square,

including seam allowances. 

Summer Stars

I have enough Summer Stars blocks made [ninety-nine] to 
start putting my quilt together. I really like the way each 
star looks a little different. Fabric placement is everything!

Road Trip Stitching

a few projects to work on. English paper piecing is the perfect
project to work on as you are rumbling down the highway.

Red background square, cut 4-1/4" x 4-1/4"
Borders cut: 4-1/4" x length of your quilts sides
 1-1/2" single thickness binding

Flying Geese
Cutting is for one block, repeat to make four blocks

from first print, cut: 2 rectangles, 2-1/2" x 4-1/2"
from second print, cut: 4 squares, 2-1/2" x 2-1/2"

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the 
wrong side of 2-1/2" squares. Place the marked square on
one corner of rectangle, trim 1/4" seam allowance and press. 
Repeat on opposite corner with remaining square.
Block should measure 2-1/2" x 4-1/2"
including seam allowances.

Join two flying geese blocks together.
Blocks should measure 4-1/2" square, including seam allowances.

This months block has a super scrappy look because I

used leftover blocks from our Timeless Tidbits project. 
I just trimmed them a bit and was good to go!

Cut each square diagonally to yield 4 triangles.

Sew on line and trim 1/4" from stitch line. Press.

Blocks should measure 4-1/2" square,
including seam allowances.

from 2 different prints, cut:
4 squares, 1-3/4" x 1-3/4"

from 2 different prints, cut:
2 strips, 1-1/4" x 3"
2 strips, 1-1/4" x 4-1/2"

Make Four Patch blocks using 1-3/4" squares.
Add 1- 1/4" x 3" strips to opposite sides
of four patch, then add 1-1/4" x 4-1/2" to 
remaining sides. Block should measure
 4-1/2" square, including seam allowances.

Broken Dish
Cutting is for one block, repeat to make four blocks

from 2 different prints, cut:
2 squares, 3" x 3"

Draw a diagonal line from corner to corner on the 
wrong side of the lighter square from each pair. 
Place the marked square on the darker square, right
sides together. Sew 1/4" from both sides of the drawn
line. Cut on the line to yield two half-square-triangle
units; trim them to 2-1/2" square.

Lay out half-square-triangles in two rows,
join the units in each row together, nesting
seam allowances. Sew the two rows together. 
Blocks should measure 4-1/2" square,
including seam allowances.
