Twelve Days of Christmas

I think this was one of our first sew alongs. It started on Christmas 

day in 2012. Here is a little 12 Days of Christmas history;

The Twelve days of Christmas historically did not reference

 the days leading up to Christmas, but the twelve days following

it. The period begins with the birth of Christ on December 25th, 

Christmas Day, and ends with the coming of the Three Wise Men 

on January 6th, the Epiphany or Three Kings Day.

Save a little time for stitching on Christmas Day
 and have a little Christmas Past fun.

Mini Mystery Revealed

I hope you have had fun quilting along with us.

Did you fiqure out the block mystery?

Each days block had the same number of pieces as the day.

Day 1 - one piece, Day 2 - two pieces, Day 3 - three pieces . . .

Setting and finishing instructions are as follows.

Tan Print

 Cut eight 1-1/4" x 3-1/2" sashing strips

Cut three 1-1/4" x 11" sashing strip

Blue Print

Cut two 3-1/2" x 15" side border pieces

Cut two 1-1/2" strips for binding

Brown Print

Cut two 3-1/2" x 17" top and bottom border pieces

Sew 1-1/4" x 3-1/2" sashing strips between blocks

Sew rows together using 1-1/4" x 11" sashing strips

Add side borders and then top and bottom borders.

Quilt as desired and bind using single thickness binding.

On the 12th day of Christmas . . .

Day 12

Cut one 1" x 8" strip from 3 different fabrics

Sew three strips together

Cut four 2" segments

Piece together like a 4 patch using photo for direction

On the 11th day of Christmas . . .

Day 11
- - - - - - - - - - -
Cut two 1-5/8" squares from dark
Cut one 1-5/8" x 3-7/8" rectangle from dark
Cut two 1-5/8" squares from light cut once diagonally (corners)
Cut one 2-3/4" square from light cut twice diagonally (setting)

Sew setting triangles ( triangles cut from 2-3/4" square )
to 1-5/8" square as shown in picture.

Attach these units to 1-5/8" x 3-7/8" rectangle.
Sew one small triangle to each corner.

On the 10th day of Christmas . . .

Day 10

Cut two 2" squares
Cut one 1-1/4" x 6" strips from 2 different fabrics
Sew 1-1/4" strips together, press towards dark
Cut into four 1-1/4" segments
Sew two 4 patches together.
Piece block using photo for layout.

 

On the 9th day of Christmas . . .

Block 9

Cut five 1-1/2" squares from dark print
Cut four 1-1/2" squares from light print
Layout 9 patch using photo and sew together

On the 8th day of Christmas . . .

Block 8
- - - - - - - - - - -
Cut two 2-1/2" squares from 2 different fabrics
Draw diagonal lines on back of one print
Pair up squares and sew 1/4" on each side of line
Cut on line. Press
Square half square triangle units to 2"
Layout block using photo and sew pinwheel together

On the 7th day of Christmas . . .

Block 7

Cut one 1-1/8" x 3-1/2" strip from 4 different fabrics
Cut one 1-1/8" x 1-5/8" strip from 2 different fabrics
Cut one 1-1/8" square for center
Use photo for layout and sew strips together

On the 6th day of Christmas . . .

Block 6
- - - - - - - - - - -
Cut two 2" squares from light print
Cut two 2" squares from dark print
Cut two 1-1/4" squares from dark print
Sew one 1-1/4" square to corner of each 2" light square
Using photo sew block together like a four patch

On the 5th day of Christmas . . .

Block 5
- - - - - - - - - - -
Cut one 2-5/8" square for center
Cut two 2-1/2" squares cut once diagonally for corners
Sew four corners to center square
Square block to 3-1/2"

On the 4th day of Christmas . . .

Block 4

Cut one 2" square from four different fabrics
Sew four squares together to make four patch.
Block should measure 3-1/2"

I am sure by now you see where this is heading.
If you are nervous about a 3" block with 12 pieces
in it , don't be. All the blocks are pretty simple.

On the 3rd day of Christmas . . .

Block 3
- - - - - - - - - - -
Cut one 4" square - cut in half one diagonally
Cut one 4-1/4" square from 2 different fabrics - cut diagonally twice
Sew two smaller triangles together and add one large triangle.
Use photo for diagram and square this block to 3-1/2"

On the 2nd day of Christmas . . .

Block Two
- - - - - - - - - - -
Cut one 4" square from two different fabrics.
Draw a diagonal line on back of one square.
Sew 1/4" on each side of the line.
Cut on line - Press
Square one half square triangle unit to 3-1/2"
You will have an extra half square triangle.

On the 1st day of Christmas . . .

Join us here each day for the next 12 days to make

 a Mini Mystery Sampler Quilt. Each day I will post

the cutting and construction information for one block.

On January 6th I will reveal the mystery,

setting and finishing instructions

Make the block each day or do it later. The pattern will

remain on the blog forever so there is no rush.

Here are a few more detail about the

12 Days of Christmas:

The finished project will be a mystery until the last day.

Finished block size is 3" ( one of my favorite )

Finished quilt approximately 18" x 24"
